Our Family Traditions

The holidays can be quite a whirlwind, and as we head into the New Year, it’s nice to reflect on what has always remained most important—family! Over the years, our family has developed a few unique traditions of our own, and we love being traditionally untraditional!

These are a few of our favorite things….

Behold the Fritz family holiday card. This year, we decided to showcase some of our favorite hobbies and interests. It’s so fun watching the kids grow and how they change over the years! A stand out for our whole family this year was staying Sonoma Strong. We are so fortunate to live here, and these shirts are a small way we can say thank you to those who helped keep us safe.

A night on the town

Our favorite family tradition is getting all gussied up and taking the kids out to a nice dinner on the town. We usually do this a few days before the holidays because it’s important to spend quality time together without all the chaos. Making traditions a part of our family year-round is what makes us who we are! This year, we enjoyed a lovely evening out in the beautiful Dry Creek Valley. This tradition of ours is not overly complex, but it makes us refocus on each other (and some delicious food).

Make it sweet and spicy

In this house, soup means comfort. On cold winter days, my family needs something to warm up with! One of my very favorite soups is sweet potato chipotle soup. It’s packed with flavor, uses fresh ingredients, is so easy to make, and best of all—it is so healthy. This soup is perfect for dinner parties or a simple night at home. A Slow, Busy Summer

Summer is wrapping up and “back to school” is knocking at my door!

It feels like just last week I was writing my “Taste of California Summer” blog for June. Every summer seems to go by too fast. It doesn’t seem to matter if the summer brings you carefree, childlike thrills or adult-like relax and chill-out celebrations, this season always comes to an end too darn quickly. This year was what I like to call a slow, busy summer around here.

From Kid to Mom, Mom to Kid, Cooking Came Full Circle

For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed cooking. My intrigue began when I was around 4 or 5 years old. I remember my friend Sara received a Betty Crocker Easy Bake Oven for her 5th birthday, I was instantly fascinated and curious (and probably a tinge jealous). I think I told the Birthday Fairy and Santa for years and years that that is what I wanted. And because I never got one (I also asked for bikes and typewriters and clothes and other toys, so please don’t think my parents or Santa or the Birthday Fairy neglected me), my desire for cooking never faded. It just got stronger.

Like many, many other parents out there, I value providing homemade meals for my family as often as possible. Healthy habits with whole foods have become a basic priority here. So often I find myself thinking about what I am going to cook over the next few days. I LOVE meal planning, and I love sorting through cookbooks and magazines as I imagine pulling together different dishes to complete our meals. So much inspiration out there!

These days my house is filled with three growing kids and a hungry husband. During our busiest days (which feels like every day) I love knowing I can quickly create a well balanced and tasty meal by using my sweet potato tomato sauce. From pasta to pizza, sloppy joes to lasagna roll-ups – I know we’re getting at least 75% vegetables per serving. Pretty cool! I am so excited and proud that my Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce has made its way to Whole Foods!

It is now on the shelves of 23 Northern California stores. What makes me so happy is that it is available to more people! Powered by sweet potatoes, my sauce is a nutritional champion!
Bursting with beta-carotene and vitamins A, B6 & C, sweet potatoes pack tremendous nutritional value to your diet.

This is a picture of me from June 4th – my FIRST vendor fair for D.O.V.E. Distributing. I was able to meet many of their energetic and hardworking account reps. What a great team.

Currently, due to the abundant zucchini in our garden, my family’s latest favorite is to smother it over zoodles (zucchini noodles). Try it for yourself! Assuming you have a spiralizer (if not, it is truly worth the investment):

Spiralize the desired amount of zucchini (for my family of 5, I spiralized 5 medium zucchini), and take the time to gently squeeze as much moisture out of the zucchini as you can. I use several paper towels for this.
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat in a medium sauté pan.
Add the zucchini noodles, and toss every 20-30 seconds. Once they are cooked through, which should only take 3-4 minutes, remove them from the pan, place onto a platter and set aside.
In a small sauce pan heat 1.5 cups of Natalia’s Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce to a simmer.
Spoon over zoodles and then sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
This is a super healthy, quick, and satisfying meal!

The night Natalia Fritz accidentally spilled puréed sweet potatoes into her marinara sauce, she had no idea that soon she’d be selling the world’s only Sweet Potato Sauce. Now known as Natalia’s Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce, her creation combines great flavor with a whole score of health benefits.

“A farmer’s daughter, I grew up in Bakersfield, California. My family has been growing premium produce for over three generations,” Natalia tells me. “Surrounded by the dedication and pride in one of the best farming communities, I inherited knowledge and high standards for healthy eating.”

When Natalia Fritz accidentally combined her homemade sweet potato puree with a simmering pot of marinara, she didn’t panic. On the contrary, she introduced her hungry family to Natalia’s Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce, which became a favorite.

“After that pivotal dinner meal, it wasn’t long until I was cooking up batches of my sauce for lasagna, chicken Parmesan, homemade pizza and as a dip for meatballs and chicken fingers. Each dish was a bigger hit than the last,” she writes on her website. “I bought myself a pressure canner and began making it and jarring it for friends and their families.”

Now available online and at select North Bay grocers, it’s gluten free, low fat (no sugar added), has no artificial ingredients and contains 75 percent vegetables (more than 50 percent sweet potato). We used it to season stuffed bell peppers and as a base for pepper pot soup. The sweet potato flavor adds a deliciously unexpected, earthy twist to anything typically made with tomato sauce or paste.

Read-Flavor of the Farm

Natalia’s Kitchen is a small local business with the heart and soul of one woman powering the enterprise along.

Natalia Fritz, the daughter of vegetable farmers, feels a deep kinship with the land and with the food that the land produces. Her respect for powerful ingredients that provide much of what growing bodies need, led to her love of the sweet potato.

Fritz would frequently come home from a trip to the Central Valley with a trunk full of sweet potatoes that she would puree for baby food. In a twist of fate, Fritz discovered the flagship product of Natalia’s Kitchen entirely by accident.

“One night, the house was going crazy. The kids were ready for dinner, my husband was asking me a question, and I accidentally poured all the pureed sweet potato into the marinara sauce for our pasta dinner,” she recounted. She stared at the pot, in part disappointed but on some level knowing it was going to be fine.

“As that point I just said, okay, this is going to be dinner,” she said. Fritz was beyond surprised when her kids all proclaimed that they loved the sweet potato pasta. A few years and multiple recipe refinements later and Natalia’s Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce was born. Fritz hired a food scientist, Dr. Sangeeta Patel of Davis, CA, to get her sauce ready for the market and found a company that could produce her sauce in bum.

Fritz approached Sonoma Country Day School and her sauce was part of the menu at the school for three years, sometimes three days a week, in pasta, pizza, lasagna, and more.

Natalia Fritz is married to Clay Fritz of Fritz Winery, whose tasting room on Dutcher Creek Road offers tastings of wine that visitors to Windsor can also find in the Windsor Tasting Lounge. In addition to launching her own food brand, Natalia Fritz oversees olive oil production from the winery estate’s olive grove and the overall experiential look-and-feel of the winery itself.

Currently Natalia’s Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce is available for purchase at Fritz Winery, Oliver’s Markets, Oakville Grocery in Healdsburg, Shelton’s, and the Windsor Farmers’ market, where Fritz herself is present most Sundays.
